Qube
The Qube2 was procuded by Sun Microsystems as a headless Server. The
Qube2 was shipped with a so called Cobalt OS which is based on Linux
Kernel (version 2.0.*) with a web interfaces for administrative tasks
(Samba, Mail etc.), but today it is totally outdated and almost every
service is compromised by known security holes! So you better change
the operating system. Because the Qube2 is based on an mips cpu and it
needs the special bootloader, you're choices are limited. Debian,
Gentoo and, of course, NetBSD are known to work with the Qube 2.
I have used the Qube2 as an home server for over a year and in this
section I want to document my expierences and give some hints how to do
stuff or how not to do ;)
The Qube 2 is still a relict from the last centry, so you better don't
expect a number cruncher. Here are the basic hardware information:
- 64Bit MIPS RISC CPU QED RM5231-250Q (superscalar, 250MHz)
- PCI-ISA Bridge/ATA Controller: Via VT821C586 (Apollo VP)
- 1x16MB RAM (EDO 3.3V, SIMM-Modul 72 Pin, with leeched memory), you can expand it up to 256 MB RAM, but, even totday, it is pretty expensive and hard to get
- Ultra-ATA
- 1 Seriel Port
- 1 PCI Port (full height!)
- 2 10/100 MBit Ethernet Interfaces (DECchip DC21142 10/100baseTX-FDX)
- a two line LCD Display at the back
